“Poison?” I choked out. “He tried to poison me?” I couldn’t hardly believe it. Although the more I had learned about James since I had seen him last, the more I could believe he would actually poison me. My hands absentmindedly cupped my throat. I knew if the poison had taken effect, I would have been dead by now. It was a comfort thing for me, I guess.

Jasper wrapped an arm around my waist and pulled me close to him. He kissed the top of my head. “Shhhh,” he said. “It obviously didn’t work or you’d be missing like Rosalie and Bella. I’m not sure WHY it didn’t work but I’m very glad it didn’t.”

The look in his eyes were animalistic almost. Not a dangerous thing, but protective. His stance over me mirrored his look. He wanted me safe, that much I knew.

I couldn’t help the feeling in my gut that started to grow. I never felt this with anyone else. I couldn’t pin point the feeling just yet. I didn’t think it was love because I hadn’t known him that long. I was falling for him though. Fast. I needed to get that idea out of my head quick. After all this was over, Rosalie, Bella and I would head back home and I’d probably never see this beautiful blue eyed man ever again. It would be just a story to giggle about with my friends and day dream about what could have been.

“Ali,” he whispered to me. “The only reason I called you here is because I knew you’d flip out being alone and probably start wandering around by yourself. This could be very dangerous what we’re about to do. I need you to listen to me and do what I say.” His tone took a very serious note, not an ounce of humor in it at all.

This shit was legit and I’m scared. “Will we....be hurt?” I could barely make the words come out of my mouth.

“Not if I can help it. So that’s why I need you to listen to me. Don’t question, just accept, okay?” He smiled, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes.

All I could do was nod and follow him as he grabbed my hand and led me around the rest of the way in and out of the trees to the other side of the meadow.

As we got closer to the other side, I could see a faint light between the trees. I looked to Jasper to ask but he put a finger to his mouth and then pointed to his head.

Oh right, I had weird mind powers now. Got it.
“Where are we going?” I asked in my head. It was still something I was gonna have to get used to. I kind of liked it though.

“Towards that light. I’d bet almost anything that’s where your friends are.”

I started to get excited about seeing my friends but Jasper shook his head.

“You can’t talk to them and we’re not going in. We’re just going to take a look at what we’re up against.” He gripped my hand tighter as we got closer to the light.

A big warehouse came into view as we took the last few steps towards where the light was coming from. I could almost see inside the window.

“Remember,” Jasper said...well, more like THOUGHT to me, “not a peep. No matter what you see in here, do not say a word.”

I tried to hide my fear on my face, but I knew my voice would give me away so I just nodded.

We walked slowly towards the window closest to us. Jasper and I both stood on our tip toes to see inside. I had to cover my mouth with my hand to keep any noise from coming out.

I saw Bella and Rosalie on what looked to be stretchers. I squeezed my eyes shut, afraid to look around. Jasper snaked an arm around me and gripped my hip tightly. I was grateful because I felt like I was beginning to spin when I opened my eyes.

I was shocked with disbelief. They looked so lifeless. So cold. Bella was never one to have any color to her anyway; the girl was always so damn pale no matter what we did. Rosalie, on the other hand, was always glowing. She always had color to her face, and a contagious light in her eyes. I could see them blinking, so I knew they were alive. It made me feel a teeny bit better.

Jasper threw his thought out to me, almost startling me. “DUCK!”

Just like he said earlier: don’t question, just accept. Which is exactly what I did. As soon as his thoughts streamed to my head, I did just as he said and ducked like my life depended on it. Which, for all I knew, it probably did.

I turned to look at Jasper, hoping to get some knowledge from him. It was beyond me how he knew when to stay out of sight. We were looking at the same exact thing in the room before us and I hadn’t seen anything out of the ordinary. Well except my lifeless shell of friends lying on stretchers.

He wasn’t looking at me or towards inside the building. He had his eyes shut tightly and looking towards the ground. Almost as if he were trying to listen to something in the distance. I wasn’t thinking anything at the moment. Nothing important anyways. Just normal stuff anybody my age would be thinking about. Like how cute Jasper was when he wasn’t even trying. Or how was I going to make this...whatever this was between us...work out. Oh yea, and how the fuck I was going to get my best friends back from the clutches of what seemed to be Satan himself.

Jasper opened his eyes, and stared right into mine. He apparently didn’t trust his voice to not be heard so he shot his thoughts at me again.

“It’s safe to look again, but just barely above eye level.”
I nodded once and looked again into the building. I did as he said and stayed to where the ledge of the window was level with the bottom of my eye socket. I looked around and saw that Rosalie had disappeared. I started to panic, wondering where she had run off to, or worse...been dragged to.

I shook my head to clear those kinds of thoughts. I breathed a slight sigh of relief when I saw that Bella had remained in place. Her mahogany hair had been taken down out of that ratty ponytail we hated. The “drunk ponytail” Rosalie always called it. It fell in beautiful, rich waves around her right shoulder and hung down off the bed. I felt a tear slip down my cheek. I don’t know why but I just hated seeing her like this. She was beautiful always but she could really knock the breath out of people when she tried. I feared this was the last time I would see her. I just wanted my friends back and here one of them was, dressed up like a doll, probably dying as we speak. Well, thought would be more appropriate.

I longed to run in there, grab her up, find Rosalie and head the hell home, putting all this weird, psycho guys, magical poison shit behind us. I couldn’t though. Not if I wanted them to survive whatever was coming next. I could feel it in my bones. The air had changed and the wind had picked up outside. Seeing how I was only in shorts and a t-shirt, it was chilly and I was starting to shiver.

I decided we needed a plan. Fast. “We need to get a plan together. I can’t sit here and watch them rot like this.”
“Alice, they’re very much alive,” Jasper said, with a bit of a bite to his tone. That, I didn’t understand. Why all of a sudden was he being harsh? “They’re not dying. They’re probably healthier than we are put together.”

I had no clue what he was talking about. He was confusing me. I tried dipping into his thoughts but all I found in my head was a void. No sound. No images. Nothing. He just looked at me with a raised eyebrow. “Can’t hear me, can you?”

I shook my head. How did he know?

“I’m blocking you. It’s something you’ll learn along the way. I’ll help you. And before you can even form your next thought, I’m blocking you for your own good. And yes, I’ll tell you later. Don’t question, just accept.”
I was speechless. Either he was more advanced with this mind reading thing or he just knew me well. My romantic side and logical self came to an agreement that it was both.

I looked away from Jasper and back to Bella. I knew I couldn’t speak to her and I was pretty sure she didn’t have the same ability Jasper and I had so I decided I would do this just for me.

I placed my index and middle finger to my lips and then moved them to touch the window. A tear slipped down my cheek again as I closed my eyes, turned my head and whispered “Bell”.

The turn of Jaspers head was almost audible. I opened my eyes to look at him and could see his blue eyes turn icy cold. He was upset, that much was obvious. I didn’t know what had happened though in the past two seconds though.

He said nothing, thought nothing and didn’t move. The only thing he did was turn his head slowly, looking back into the building.

I looked back into the building as well and almost passed out.

Bella was looking directly back at me, her eyes blood red.
