"Where did he say this place was again?" I asked Rosalie. She decided to ride with us to follow the boys from Taco Bell to their friends house. They said it wasn't that far away but we had been driving for almost an hour.
"He said it was close to Portland somwhere." She looked down at her phone and nodded. "Beaverton? Does that sound familiar?"
"Nothing about Oregon sounds familiar," Bella said, shifting for the umpteenth time in the passenger seat. She was getting very antsy and I couldn't figure out why.
"What's up your ass, Bells?" Rosalie poked her from the backseat. She had her hair piled up on top of her head, just like her mom hated. She still had her aviator sunglasses on despite it being dusk outside.
"Nothing. It's just...nothing," Bella sighed. Something was definitely bothering her. I couldn't put my finger on it but she looked like she was blushing.
"Alright, Bella, spill. You've been acting weird since we left Taco Bell AN HOUR AGO." I emphasized those last words for Rosalie's benefit, hoping she'd get in contact with Emmet and ask him when we'd get to wherever the hell we were going. "So what's going on? And there's no way out of talking about this other than to jump out of the car, which I wouldn't advise on doing since we're speeding and you'd more than likely not make it to see tomorrow." I had cornered her and she knew it. She'd be spilling her guts in three...two...
"Okay fine!" she exclaimed. "It's Edward. He's beautiful and gorgeous and smart and funny and damn near PERFECT! Too perfect for me. He keeps saying all these sweet things that make me melt and make my vagina tingle at the same time. I feel like such a nerd cuz I don't know what to say. I don't know how to talk to boys. The last male that showed me any kind of attention was the cop that pulled me over. Not exactly good attention but attention nonetheless. I don't know what to say to him when he tells me I'm pretty and beautiful and I've got deep eyes. My first reaction is to start listing off sports stats or not so kindly decline their offer to stick their dick in my mouth or my twat. That's the only time guys pay attention to me. When they WANT something. I don't know how to be normal!" She gasped and finally came up for air. She had made a two minute speech in one breath.
"Bella, Bella, Bella. Bells, baby. This is what FRIENDS are for. To guide you through your first sexual encounter with a male. Lucky for you, I'm an expert at the male gender. Alice is just here for moral support." She flashed me a big smile as I scowled at her in the rearview mirror. "You should be thanking me, Alice, instead of mean mugging me. Who helped you through the losing of your virginity? Me. You're welcome."
Bella laughed. "I totally forgot about that. That's kinda sick. Who does that?"
"Rosalie does. She obviously thought I wouldn't be able to handle the pressure of sex on my own," I scoffed. I was so nervous about having sex with Tyler. I knew it was wrong to have sex with a man who wasn't available but he suggested it and I, being 16 and not knowing anything other than what he told me, agreed to it. I didn't want him to know I wasn't experienced though. So Rosalie to the rescue. She had stolen an earpiece from her then boyfriends dad. Not really sure what he used it for, I was too afraid to ask. I had that thing in my ear the whole time as Rosalie coaxed me through my first sex experience. Since I was a virgin and tight as the cork in a wine bottle, Tyler didn't last long. Rosalie had informed me of that one so I wasn't too disappointed. I was just ready to get it over with. I later learned that there was way more to sex than that.
"Listen, bitch" Rosalie said. "I was being a friend and helping you out. What would you have done when Tyler shot his load across your stomach had I not been in your ear. You would have panicked! Just thank me and move on." She crossed her arms and smiled matter of factly.
I rolled me eyes and turned my attention right back to the road. It had gotten dark all of a sudden and foggy. I could barely make out the red tail lights in front of me.
"Thank you Rosalie," she said in a mocking imitation of my voice. "Ya welcome bitch," she finished and smiled to herself.
I laughed to myself and turned the conversation back to Bella. "Edward obviously likes you. I don't know him but most guys don't flirt with a girl they don't like or don't wanna sleep with." Rosalie was nodding her head in agreement. Taking that as approval, I continued. "And since he hasn't tried getting in your pants already, or at least implied doing as such, I'm gonna say he genuinely likes you. I'm guessing you like him to or we wouldn't be having this conversation. So, just talk to him as a guy you like. Ask him about himself. Where he's from, what he likes."
"Stay away from favorite colors or favorite foods, though. That's a major conversation killer," Rosalie added.
"Yea, talking about his favorite anything is just dooming you both. Now, since you've seen probly every movie made since the 80's, you COULD ask him what movies he likes, or what kind of movies he likes. You could recommend some to him to keep the convo flowing. Other than that, like Rosalie said, keep away from the 'favorites' topics. Unless he asks about yours. Then you can talk about it but keep it to a minimum. Don't wanna talk to much about yourself." I felt like a teacher, edcuating kids in "Small Talk 101".
Rosalie took the conversation from there because I was beginning to lose the red tail lights in front of me. I needed to pay attention. I speed up til I could see them a little more clearly. They suddenly started braking and put on their left turn signal. I followed suit and turned onto the gravel driveway.
After turning, they picked up speed but not as fast as they would have on the main road. I was struggling to keep up because not only had the fog thickened due to the forest we were apparently driving through, but their car was kicking up dust from the gravel. There didn't seem to be any turn offs from the driveway so I just assumed that I would keep driving straight should I lose sight of the Jeep in front of me. I was starting to freeze with the air tuned up to the max in the car since the sun had gone down. I turned the air off and rolled my window down, letting the slight warm breeze whip through my hair. Since it was short, it didn't get in my face much.
"Looks like somebody chased a bunny on a steamroller through here," I mumbled to myself, "and then covered it with rocks."
Rosalie continued to prattle on about what not to say to a guy you've got the hots for as I followed the curvy driveway up and up. I could tell we were going up a hill but I didn't realize how high up we were until the trees started clearing. I looked out my window and saw the city lights blaring. It was a bit creepy how far away we were and how high up. I shook my head of the thought and swallowed the lump that had started developing in my throat the higher up we got.
I silently gave thanks as the Jeep began to brake and slow down. I looked ahead of their vehicle and saw about 20 cars lined up the rest of the driveway, leading to a house. It wasn't a big house but it wasn't a small house either. I stopped the car, put it in park and shut it off after rolling my window up. Rosalie jumped out as did Bella. I wasn't sure I wanted to leave any important things in the car, seeing how I was in a strange town with strange people, but I figured my stuff would be safer out here than in the house full of people. I took my car key off my keychain and stuffed it in my bra. I was absolutely sure nobody would be going anywhere near that area. I put the keychain in my purse under the seat just in case someone walked by and got curious. I stuffed my phone in the other side of my bra. Rosalie was yelling at me to hurry my ass so I stepped out of the car and locked all the doors.
As I walked towards Bella's outstretched hand, I once again swallowed the lump that had decided to reside in my throat. Upon grabbing her hand, I calmed somewhat until we neared James.
He wore the same shit-eating grin from earlier and I became more disgusted by the second. Bella let go of my hand as she smiled and ran to catch up with Edward. Rosalie was already going through the front door of the house with Emmet and I wished at least one of them had stayed behind with me. I could hold my own, of course but I was more creeped out than scared. James' next statement before we entered the house brought me closer to the latter emotion.
"Glad you could join me, I sure hope you're not a screamer."
